Cargo transportation volume through all the border ports in northern China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region totaled 100.07 million tonnes in the year to December 8, surpassing the 100-million-tonne mark for the first time in history, according to border authorities.

Ganqimaodu, the largest border port between China and Mongolia, completed 34.98 million tonnes of cargo import and export, accounting for one third of the total.

The port authorities didn't give a breakdown of the specific cargoes, but the majority would be coal imported from Mongolia.

Last week, authorities with Ganqimaodu border crossing said it imported 33.43 million tonnes of coal in the year to December 5, while total handling of cargo imports and exports stood at 34.68 million tonnes.

It was reported that Ganqimaodu has achieved "customs clearance within seconds", thanks to the technological innovation in smart passage gates and smart port, as well as the optimized clearance process and supervision methods.
